Support Groups

All of these Support/Wellness Groups were conceived as a resource for patients, caregivers and family members to learn about PD and to find ways of dealing with the progression of the disease. We know that there are numerous questions and challenges that follow a diagnosis. Everyone needs someplace to turn to for information and guidance, and it is beneficial to be amongst people who understand and who share your experiences. Each of these meetings is educational. A speaker will address particular issues or aspects of PD.

These are also opportunities for networking and socializing, which are important aspects of handling PD. The groups are here to help, so please take advantage of them. All of the groups are free to attend. We hope to see you there.

Many of our support groups do not meet in July and August. The regular schedule resumes in September. For more information, please call the office at 716-449-3795.

West Seneca Parkinson’s Wellness Group (Southtowns Support Group)

This was the original wellness group in Western New York. It was inspired by Dr. Kim Trinidad and was founded by Pat Weigel, RN, and Tom O’Donnell in 1997. The first meeting drew a respectable seventeen people, though the mailing list has since grown to include more than 800 names. Attendance at any given meeting usually numbers 50 to 75.

Present at every meeting is a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a speech pathologist, a social worker and a registered nurse, all of whom have better than 20 years experience in their fields. Patients can meet with these professionals either one-on-one or in groups.

Meetings begin with the Young Onset Group, followed by the Main Meeting. A lecture by a local Parkinson’s expert is often offered.
